Why DMV basements are tricky
Much of the area sits on clay soils that hold water after heavy rain, and summers are humid. Moisture moves up through concrete even when the slab looks dry. That vapor is what ruins carpet pads and cups wood floors, so it has to be measured, not guessed.
What we recommend below grade
WPC vinyl is the most forgiving: waterproof core, cork underlay, and approved for below-grade use. WISE cork is the PVC-free choice and takes the chill off a slab. Marmoleum Cinch Loc Seal works over a vapor barrier when readings are within Forbo's limits. We do not install solid hardwood below grade, and we are cautious with wall-to-wall carpet in basements.
When flooring is not the answer
If there is active water intrusion, standing water after storms, or readings far outside every manufacturer's limits, we will tell you to address drainage or waterproofing first. A new floor will not fix a wet basement, and replacing it after a flood is wasteful.

What is the best flooring for a basement in Maryland?
For most finished basements we recommend waterproof WPC or WISE cork over a vapor barrier, chosen after a moisture test. The right answer depends on the readings and whether you want to avoid PVC.
Do I need a dehumidifier after installing basement flooring?
In the DC region, running a dehumidifier in summer to hold roughly 35 to 55% relative humidity protects the floor, furniture and indoor air quality.
