Where cork comes from
Cork is the bark of the cork oak. It is stripped from living trees by hand, grows back, and is harvested again years later, so no tree is felled to make a cork floor. Much of the cork in flooring is granulated material left over from making wine stoppers.
Why cork suits DMV condos and rowhouses
Many condo boards in DC, Arlington and Bethesda require an acoustic underlayment rating for hard flooring. Cork's integrated underlay helps meet those requirements, and its thermal insulation takes the chill off slab floors. Always confirm your building's specific requirement before ordering; we can supply the manufacturer's acoustic test data for your board.
Care and expectations
Cork dents under concentrated loads, so use felt pads and wide casters. Direct sun will lighten it over time, which is normal. Keep grit off it with doormats at entrances.

Common questions
Is cork flooring waterproof?
Traditional cork planks with an HDF core are water resistant, not waterproof. Wicanders WISE uses a cork-based rigid core designed for wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
Is cork flooring good for pets?
Cork is comfortable and quiet for pets. Claws can mark the surface, so choose a product with a hard finish such as WISE HRT and keep nails trimmed.
