What WPC decking is
WPC stands for wood plastic composite: wood fiber or sawdust blended with plastic, usually polyethylene, and extruded into boards. Every board on this page is capped, meaning a harder polymer shell is formed around the composite core to resist stains, scratches and fading. It is a different product from the indoor vinyl plank also sold as WPC; our guide to WPC decking vs WPC flooring explains the difference.
The boards we carry
Affordable, high recycled share. Trex Enhance (95% recycled material, per Trex) and Fiberon Good Life (at least 94%, per Fiberon) are scalloped, capped boards that keep the cost of a composite deck down. They are the two we price first for an affordable deck installation.
Capped on four sides. TimberTech PRO Terrain wraps its cap around the underside too, with Mold Guard technology, which suits low decks and shaded yards that stay damp.
Cooler in the sun. Trex Transcend Lineage has a shell Trex engineered to reflect sunlight, and a 50-year fade and stain warranty.
How to compare composite boards
Cap coverage: three sides or four. Profile: scalloped boards are lighter and cost less; solid boards are heavier. Warranty: read the fade and stain term, which ranges from 25 to 50 years across this page. Heat: darker colors run hotter in direct sun, on every brand. Recycled content: take the manufacturer's stated percentage, not a general green label.
Decks in DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia
Humid summers and leaf and pollen fall under the region's tree canopy are what dirty a deck, and mold and mildew feed on that debris rather than on a capped board itself. Common questions
Is WPC decking the same as composite decking?
Yes. WPC, wood plastic composite, is the material most composite deck boards are made of. It is not the same as WPC vinyl flooring, which is an indoor product.
Does composite decking contain PVC?
The composite boards on this page are wood fiber blended with polyethylene or a similar plastic; the manufacturers do not list PVC as a component. Cellular PVC decking is a separate product that contains no wood.
How long does composite decking last?
The manufacturers back the boards on this page with fade and stain warranties of 25 to 50 years, depending on the line. The frame under them usually decides how long the deck lasts, which is why we inspect or build it to code.
